V.M. SALGAOCAR LAW COLLEGE WINS LEGAL AID AWARD

 

V.M. Salgaocar College of Law was awarded the ‘Legal aid award 2024’, which was powered by Knowledge Steez. The award ceremony was held on 13th October, 2024, at Indian Society of International Law, New Delhi. The award was received by Dr. G. Shaber Ali, Offg. Principal.

The award is for exceptional recognition of Law Colleges and Universities for commendable and noteworthy contributions to the community. The report period was January to December 2023.

The Legal Aid Society of the College, is actively involved in providing free legal aid in the community through 27 legal aid cells in different villages and towns across the State. The Legal aid cells carry out legal literacy programs, para-legal services, applying for social welfare schemes for the needy, and other community and outreach activities.

The college compliments the efforts of faculty incharges of Legal Aid Society, Dr. Aamod M. Shirali, and Asstt. Prof. Shaina Dhulapkar for steering the legal aid activities. The institution also acknowledges the efforts of former incharges Asstt. Prof. Ashwini Naik and Ms. Ruhi Phadte for their significant contribution during the report period 2023.

The Socorro Legal Aid Cell along with faculty incharge Dr. Priya Onsker organized a session on Accessibility and Disability Rights. The guest speaker for the programme was Mr. Prakash Waman Kamat,(National Director of Diversity). The session was held at the Sanjay Centre for Special Education, Goa.  the speaker addressed various challenges faced by people with disabilities, including discrimination in education and employment. Mr. Kamat emphasized the need for societal change, urging participants to respect individuals with disabilities rather than pity them, and highlighted the importance of equal constitutional rights as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The program concluded with a focus on job discrimination and the lack of awareness among parents regarding available job reservations for their children with disabilities. Mr. Kamat called for reasonable accommodations in workplaces and emphasized the need for better implementation of disability laws. The session fostered active participation, leaving attendees with valuable insights and a renewed commitment to advocate for disability rights in the community. Cell Incharge Shibani Singh welcomed the gathering and the cell member Tashina Pinto Do Rosario proposed the vote of thanks.

Pernem Free Legal Aid Cell of V.M.Salgaocar College of Law  organised a talk on "Juvenile Justice Act"  for the students of the Lokshikshan High School Dhargal Pernem Goa on 1st october 2024.

The resource person for the same was Adv.Shabnam Adam khan (advocacy member of the project pearl) The dais was graced by the    resource speaker adv. Shabnam Khan, Faculty in charge of Pernem Free Legal Aid Cell Asst. Prof. Varsha Redkar, Incharge of Pernem Legal Aid Cell Miss. Disha Parab and Dy. Incharge Mr.Goviind Sawant . The floral welcome of the guests and compering was done by cell member Siya Apule. Miss. Disha Parab our cell in charge introduced the guest speaker and introduced the Pernem Free Legal Aid Cell to the students.

Guest speaker Adv. Shabnam Adam khan explained the importance of juvenile justice act to all the students. She briefed everybody about the aims to protect, rehabilitate, and reform children in conflict with the law, ensuring their rights and well-being. The programme concluded with the vote of thanks which was proposed by the Dy. In charge of the cell Mr. Govind Sawant.

JAN SUNWAII HELD AT MOIRA

The Legal Aid Society and Moira Free Legal Aid cell, organized a Jan Sunwaii, at Moira Village Panchayat, Moira, on 11th October, 2024, at 3:30 p.m.

The Jan Sunwaii was held in presence of Sarpanch Mr. Sagar R. Naik, Panch members Mr. Mohan Volvoikar and Ms. Julieta D’Cunha, Adv. Slaney Maciel. The objective of the Jan Sunwaii was to resolve issues of people in the village panchayat. 

The Sarpanch addressed issues concerning with issue of Trade licenses, collection of house tax arrears, illegal land filling, Garbage handling and disposal, No objection certificate to be obtained from panchayat, flooding of water from sluice gates into the fields, road condition, beautification of village and other issues concerning the local community. Adv. Slaney Maciel, requested the Panchayat to revive the Library of the Panchayat and get grants from Directorate of Art and Culture and Central Library. The Library Project was inaugurated in 2020.  The Jan Sunwaii received a good response from the residents and students. The Panchayat encouraged the Moira Legal Aid Cell to conduct more gatherings to attend to socio-legal issues of the local community.

The programme was attended by Dr. Aamod M. Shirali, Director of Legal Aid Society, Asstt. Prof. Shaina Dhulapkar. The programme was moderated by Ms. Nidhi Gawade and coordinated by Mr. Michael Lobo, the Student incharge of Moira Legal Aid Cell.

Mandrem Free Legal Aid Cell conducted their major programme on 28/09/2024 from 10:00 am to 12:30  pm at Morjim Gram Panchayat hall at Morjim Pernem Goa and the topic for the major programme was “Child Rights, Juvenile justice Act and Motor Vehicle Act.” The guest speaker for the said programme was Adv. Swapnil Dabholkar and Traffic Inspector DnyaneshwarGawas , Sarpanch of Morjim village panchayat were invited as the Chief Guest .

The Chief Speaker, Adv . Swapnil Dabholkar delivered a very informative talk on child rights and juvenile justice act . He spoke about all the rights available to children like right to education, right against exploitation , etc and provided detail explanation of how to protect children from abuse and sexual harrasment and the current situation in goa about children.

     LEGAL AWARENESS PROGRAM AT MAHAMAYA HIGH SCHOOL MAYEM, BICHOLIM.

 

  On 16th of August, while the country is celebrating its 78th independence, the Bicholim Free Legal Aid    Cell, Students of V. M Salgaocar College of Law, Miramar conducted a Legal Awareness program in       Mahamaya High School, Mayem. The interactive awareness was based around the topics of the POCSO    Act, as well as Child Rights. The program started with welcoming the guest speaker Hon’ble Justice          Smt. Vijaya Pol(Retired District Judge-1 and additional sessions Judge, Mapusa, Goa), headmistress           Mrs. Tanuja Govekar and Faculty Incharge of Cell Miss.Siddhi Naik. 

  Speaking on the Topic of the program Hon’ble Justice Mrs. Vijaya Pol made interaction very open and      comfortable for the students as well as their parents,They were made aware of the difference between       good touch and bad touch and how to react or act accordingly .They were instructed the importance of        opening up to their parents or to anyone they trust in case they face such a situation and also helping and    supporting each other during any of such situation. They were educated about their rights as humans and    as young women in the society in simple and understandable terms.

Bandora Free Legal Aid Cell conducted their major programme on 30/09/2024 from 10:00 am to 01:00 pm at PES’s Ravi S. Naik college of Arts & Science Farmagudi, Ponda - Goa in the Swami Vivekanand Hall and the topic for the major programme was Cyber-crimes and how to avoid cyber scams. The guest speaker for the said programme was Police Inspector Vidyanand V. Pawar, Cyber Crimes Unit Goa for which Mr. Ritesh Naik, Ex Chairperson, Ponda Municipal Council and Secretary of Ponda Education Society were invited as the Chief Guest.


The Chief Speaker PI Vidyanand V. Pawar gave very informative talk on Cyber Crimes and How to avoid different types of online frauds by scammers such as harassment, cybersex trafficking, matrimonial frauds, online banking frauds, skimming, phising and various other frauds.

On the Occasion of "World Intellectual Property Rights Day", four members of the Siolim Legal Aid Cell, conducted a session on Contract Law and IPR. The session was conducted today between 2 pm to 3 pm at Agnel institute of technology and design, Assagao, Goa. The speakers of the session were: Jane De Souza, Sinatra Fernandes, Aditya Gad and Prajwal Bhaip.

 The Students of Bastora Free legal aid cell in association with the Bastora village panchayat and Sports and cultural association of Bastora organised a plant and Fertilizer Distribution drive for the Villagers of Bastora at Village Panchayat, Bastora. The chief guest for the Occasion was former MLA of  Aldona constituency Shri. Glen souza Ticlo, Sarpanch of Village panchayat Bastora Shri. Subash Morajkar and Panch members of Bastora.

Orientation for the In charges and Deputy In charges on 4th July 2024



 

The orientation for the Legal Aid Cell took place on 4th July 2024 at 12:30 PM in Hall No. 8. This event was organized to orient the cell in-charges and deputies on the functioning of the cells, which are set to commence operations from 6th July 2024 (Saturday).

Agenda of the Orientation:

An Introduction to Legal Aid Cells was given by Dr. Aamod Shirali which had an overview of the purpose and objectives of the Legal Aid Cells and the importance of providing legal assistance and spreading legal awareness. Followed by the roles and responsibilities of the cell in-charges and deputies. Then a detailed information on the minor and major programmes to be conducted by the cells along with the guidelines on how these programmes should be executed, including planning, coordination, reporting and about the geotag pictures.

The orientation was successful in providing the necessary information and guidance to the cell in-charges and deputies. Dr. Aamod Shirali and Ms. Shaina Dhulapkar emphasized the importance of commitment and dedication in ensuring the success of the Legal Aid Cells. The attendees left the orientation well-informed and motivated to start their work on 6th July 2024. This orientation marks a significant step towards the effective functioning of the Legal Aid Cells and the promotion of legal awareness and assistance within the community.
